Choi & Cunliffe Jazz Orchestra East Meets West
18 Extraordinary Musicians. Two Musical Visions. One Extraordinary Orchestra.
What happens when two gifted composer-arrangers bring together some of Los Angeles’ finest jazz musicians and give them an orchestra built to fly?
You get the Choi & Cunliffe Jazz Orchestra.
Led by Korean-born composer, pianist and conductor Mina Choi and Grammy-winning pianist, composer and arranger Bill Cunliffe, this 18-piece ensemble brings the power of a classic big band into a thoroughly modern musical world—sophisticated, adventurous and bursting with life.
This is not a nostalgia act.
Choi and Cunliffe use the jazz orchestra as a canvas for bold new compositions, inventive arrangements and unexpected musical connections. Their repertoire can move from the jazz lineage of George Cables to the melodic imagination of Vince Guaraldi, from the unmistakable sound of Herb Alpert to the raw energy of Nirvana—all reimagined through the colors, textures and sheer force of a full jazz orchestra.
At the center of it all are two distinct musical perspectives.
East meets West.
Precision meets spontaneity.
Composition meets improvisation.
And then 18 exceptional musicians bring it all to life.
Here at Campus JAX, you won't experience this orchestra from the distant balcony of a concert hall. You'll be just feet away—close enough to feel the brass, hear the musicians respond to one another, and witness the split-second interplay that makes great jazz so exhilarating.
For longtime jazz lovers, this is a chance to hear the big-band tradition pushed somewhere new.
For everyone else, it may completely change what you think a jazz orchestra can be.
